Here’s our top five tips to help you stay positive as a single mom….
Eliminate the negative when you can
If you have toxic people in your life that you’re related to, this tip for staying positive as a single mom might be easier said than done. But you can start simple by eliminating negative thoughts from your mind when you feel them start to creep in. Of course there will days when you feel mighty, but there will also be times when you may feel as if the world is crumbling all around you. And hey, that’s okay!
What you need to do is stay strong and always make a conscious effort to focus on the positive—and encourage your children to do the same, too. They often say that we are the company that we keep, so eliminating negative thoughts, energy, and people is a helpful way to cultivate positivity in your own life.
Practice gratitude always
Of course if you went through a messy divorce or breakup or you’re struggling to provide for your kids on a fixed one-person income, it can be hard to be grateful. But when you start counting your blessings and practicing gratitude for all of the good in your life, you will be amazed at just how quickly your perspective on life will transform. Remember, each day is a gift, that’s why they call it the present!

Take time for yourself
This can be tricky if you don’t have any help with your kids, but it’s vital for your mental health and well-being that you make a conscious effort to give yourself grace and time to unwind and clear your mind. It’s easy to get stuck in the negative when you’re constantly burned out and running on fumes (speaking from experience here!) But, life will still be there waiting for you, I promise. Self-care is a vital practice that will help you keep a positive outlook.
You need to relax and take it easy when your body signals to you that it desperately needs you to hit the reset button. Our kids want to see us happy, and spending time with them when we’re not thinking about what we need be doing is key. Your kids need you, and vice versa. Take time to stop and smell the roses, and remember that life is a marathon, not a sprint.
Let go of guilt
No matter what your life situation may be, ending up as single mom is likely what you didn’t expect to happen. It’s hard to let go of a vision that we created in our minds for ourselves, the person we love, and the children we share with them. But sometimes love is not enough to save a relationship. And, as we know, sometimes calling it quits is for the best—and this goes for the sake of the children, too.
Your kids want to see their parents happy, and sometimes that means that breaking up is for the best. Sure, drop offs are hard coming home to an empty home, being reminded of toys and other things of theirs filling the home in their absence. But it’s important that you rid yourself of any guilt about being a single mom. This is just the way that life worked out, so stay positive and focus on the better days ahead where you can show your children you’re strong, courageous, and proud to be their mother—no matter what the situation may be.

Create a routine that works for you—and stick to it
Routines might make a person crazy if they’re much more of a go-with-the-flow type, but routines are a great way to stay on task and remain positive. It also provides us with a sense of accomplishment once we navigate those routines and everything falls into a nice flow. Routines are great for teaching children about structure and balance, and it can be a fun way for you and your kids to stay positive and accountable together.
